SAVING WATER AND ENERGY BY TACKLING LIMESCALE THE SMART WAY AT APHRODITE HILLS

Lanitis Development Ltd and Q-Water Cyprus were proud to launch the KalGUARD+ Limescale Management System at Aphrodite Hills on Thursday May 21st which was officially opened in a special ceremony by Mr Brian Olley, Deputy British High Commissioner.

"This project is testament to the strength and depth  of cooperation between the Cypriot and British business community, which is of great importance to both our countries" said Mr Olley. "With the culmination of their knowledge and expertise they are today unveiling to you the first Kal Guard System installation in Europe to treat the water supply of a complete community.  Today you are seeing the launch of a major project in terms of reducing water consumption and the carbon footprint of users in Cyprus, but also for creating employment opportunities here and in UK".

The damage limescale causes in pipes, taps, boilers and other equipment has an enormous knock-on effect in terms of wasted water and increased energy costs.  It is a well known that Cyprus has very hard water with typical hardness of >400 parts per million (ppm) and in some regions over 1000 ppm which is why taps, shower heads, immersion heaters, solar panels, appliances and boilers need replacing so frequently.  Aphrodite Hills Resort is no exception to the problem and Lanitis Development has invested a great deal of time and effort in research to find an effective solution.

"There is a lot at stake" said Mark Hadfield, Q-Water Technical and Sales Director. "Treating limescale in an environmentally friendly manner can make a huge difference to the islands water problem, while at the same time saving business owners, hoteliers, industrialists, developers and government a great deal of money currently spent dealing with the effects of limescale.  Once limescale has been eliminated from a buildings water supply then other water saving devices can be deployed.  As a bonus the process brings measurable improvement in the quality of the water and beneficially effects on health and hygiene".

Working closely with Paphos-based water specialist company Q-Water, Lanitis Development has conducted successful studies involving the use of a standard domestic KalGUARD+ limescale inhibitor. Manufactured by UK-based WaterMATIC Division of Sentinel Performance Solutions Group the KalGUARD+ is a unique, patent pending product that uses scientifically proven electrolytic principles to prevent the build up of limescale with consequent savings of water, energy and CO emissions, without the need for the use of chemicals.

Based on the results of these early trials an industrial sized system of KalGUARD+ complete with filtration has now been installed to treat the water supply not just for the hotel but the entire community including golf club, spa and residences. Capable of treating over 1500 tons of water per day or the equivalent to the needs of a large village, this is the first installation of its kind in Europe and will be of immense interest to many countries with similar problems involving limescale.  Building on this development work, Q-Water is now in a position to produce portable KalGUARD+ systems that can be placed in remote locations, require minimal servicing and can deal with large scale water demands reducing limescale and in turn saving water, energy and money for everyone concerned.

The installation at Aphrodite Hills will be monitored closely to determine just how effective the system is in coping with water at the extreme edge of the hardness scale. While Lanitis, Q-Water and Watermatic are confident in the success of the project, the carefully monitored, measured and documented evidence will be of immense value in providing a factual basis to help other large scale water users determine a precise and proven solution to their needs.
